Will Pruning Fix a Topped Tree?

Tree topping is not considered a best practice for tree care. In fact, many topped trees experience instant decline, and often times, die. If you have a topped tree on your property that you wish to strengthen and repair, corrective pruning might just be your best option. Continue reading to learn how you can fix a topped tree with routine tree pruning.

Tree Pruning for Topped Trees

Many homeowners are relieved to learn that with a little time, patience, and pruning, they can restore a tree that has been adversely affected by topping. When it comes to repairing a topped tree with tree pruning, it is not the pruning itself that should be your focus. Instead, it should be the timing; not just the time of year, but also, the intervals to which you have your tree pruned.

Timing is Key

First, you want to make sure you do not begin your corrective pruning right after your tree has been topped. This can drastically decrease its chances of survival. Instead, wait until you see sprouts and limbs growing from the topped portions of the tree. This indicates that the tree is attempting to replenish its energy reserves, which in turn implies that it can withstand additional modification. Such sprouting will take at least one to two years, so you must be patient.

Once a couple of years has passed and your topped tree is growing plenty of limbs and sprouts, you want to ensure it is the right time of year to prune a tree. The recommended seasons for tree pruning are the seasons in which trees are dormant, namely late winter and fall. Because every tree has different genetic codes and variations, they all will respond differently to corrective pruning after topping, and will grow at different rates.

From there, your trees should be pruned once every year or two to promote exponential growth in strength and get your trees back to a reliable condition. See our blog, “Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Pruning” to learn more about pruning trees. If you are unsure about how often your particular landscaping trees should be pruned, talk to a licensed Indianapolis tree service contractor for professional assessments and advice.

Trees Help Us Through Winter

Trees do a lot to help us through the winter. First, they serve as a natural snow fence, preventing excessive snow accumulation on our properties. Similarly, they serve as a natural wind barrier, which helps to prevent freezing snow conditions on our properties and makes our outdoor areas more comfortable. As a result of being a natural snow and wind barrier, your home is protected from the harsh effects of heavy winds, cold temperatures, and snowstorms, all of which can cause an increase in your heaters performance.

By adding more trees to your property’s landscape, you can help reduce the harsh effects of winter weather, and therefore, reduce your home’s need to continue producing heated air. This is how trees can help you increase your energy efficiency, and thus, save you money on HVAC bills!

Where to Plant Trees

In order to maximize the utility of your landscaping trees for the purpose of energy efficiency optimization, you must develop a concentrated strategy that best meets the needs of your house’s location. For instance, if all the bedrooms in your house are facing the backyard, you might want to focus planting trees in the back of your property to shield that side and help keep your rooms cozy in the winter and shady in the summer. Just be sure to avoid planting trees near utilities or power lines, as this can pose several hazards and break certain city codes.

Another spot to focus your tree planting strategy would be on the East and West side, where the sun rises and sets every day. Although this doesn’t have much of an influence in the wintertime, protecting your house from sun exposure will keep it cooler and save you money on air conditioning bills in the summer. See our blog, “Tree Planting Tips” for help with choosing a good spot for your new trees.

The Most Common Types of Winter Tree Damages

Wintertime is one of the most destructive seasons of the year considering how impactful snow, ice, and cold temperatures can be, not only to people, but also to our surrounding structures. One of the most vulnerable assets on our properties are our landscaping trees. They are highly susceptible to all sorts of winter damage. For this reason, it is important to protect your trees before the winter is officially in full affect.

Continue reading to learn the most common types of winter tree damages to be on the lookout for this season, as well as, how to protect your landscaping trees from such seasonal harm.

Snow and Ice Damage

As mentioned, snow and ice are incredibly destructive, especially when it comes to trees and shrubs. Not only can the weight of the snow and ice jeopardize the structural integrity and strength of such flora, the mere amount of excess moisture can cause an extensive amount of damage to the entire tree, as well as the root system and surrounding soil.

In order to protect your trees and shrubs from snow and ice damage in the winter, it is important to mulch properly, stake your trees if they are young or vulnerable, and consider wrapping the trunk and burlap material to retain warmth through the entirety of the season. Then when spring comes, be sure to stay on top of your tree’s pruning needs. When trees are pruned properly, there is less risk of broken branches and limbs as a result of heavy snow and ice accumulation.

Heavy Wind Damage

in the winter, snow and ice are not the only climate changes that can affect your landscaping. Strong winds are another common seasonal occurrence. Not only can they cause branches and tree limbs to break off, heavy winds can topple trees over completely. This is incredibly dangerous if trees are near houses, cars, playgrounds, and other areas where there is lots of human traffic or assets. In order to protect your trees from heavy wind damage, you might want to consider cabling embracing trees that are very young or vulnerable. Vulnerable trees would be trees that are sick, dying, leaning, or otherwise structurally-compromised.

Tree Trunk and Root Damage

A tree’s trunk and root system is important because it grounds the tree and provides strength, stability, and nourishment. However, in the wintertime, inclement weather and cold temperatures can affect the quality of tree trunks and tree bark, and ultimately the underground root system. In order to protect your trees from trunk and root damage in the winter, it is important to ensure your trees are being properly fertilized, mulched, watered, and given plenty of sunlight. If you have questions about proper tree care in the springtime, see our blog, “What Should I Do For My Trees Right Before Spring?” to learn more.

Social Benefits

Trees provide us with several different types of social benefits. At work, employees get to enjoy the serene and relaxing ambience of trees and shrubbery around their windows, and even their outdoor spaces. At home, not only do trees provide a more beautiful ambience inside, which makes us feel relaxed and comfortable, they also serve as conversation starters, especially when you have interesting species of trees in or around your home. Furthermore, trees are often used in memorials to honor a person after they have passed on for years to come. Some studies even suggest that trees can prevent crime in neighborhoods, namely around apartment complexes and condominium communities.

Communal Benefits

In addition to social benefits, trees serve a variety of communal benefits as well. Even on private lots and properties, trees can provide several advantages and promote well-being within a community. Some trees represent memorials or tributes to local achievements or events. Other times, trees conserve architectural and engineering purposes. They do this by providing privacy, enhancing city views, reducing glare from the sun, block undesirable views, and even direct pedestrian traffic. They can also serve as location points or trackers for travelers.

Environmental Benefits

As mentioned, trees provide us an atmosphere by giving off oxygen and consuming carbon dioxide. Furthermore, they greatly impact our climate, air quality, wildlife habitation, and much more. Tree leaves also help purify the air we breathe by eliminating dust and other airborne particles that can upset our upper respiratory systems. Facts About Ash Yellows Phytoplasma Infections

Ash Yellows is a tree disease that targets Ash tree species ((Fraxinus), but mostly affects White Ash trees and Green Ash trees. Not only does this disease affect trees, it can also lead to a decline in other plants, such as lilac (Syringa) species.  Continue reading to learn some important facts about Ash Yellows phytoplasma infections, including how to spot the signs and what you must do if your landscaping trees are infected.

Signs of Ash Yellows

Trees that are most susceptible to Ash Yellows are Ash tree species ((Fraxinus), primarily White and Green Ash trees. White and Green Ash trees generally die within one to three years of becoming infected, while other species of Ash tree can withstand the disease years longer. Common signs of an infected tree include stunted growth, shoot development, tufted foliage, branch dieback, crown dieback in the winter, and lack of leaf production in the spring.

Managing Ash Yellows

There is no real evidence yet to determine how Ash Yellows phytoplasma infections evolve and spread. For this reason, there is no real cure for a tree once infected. Most trees will die with a few years. Although it has been discovered that some species of insects, such as leafhoppers and spittlebugs, are carriers of the phytoplasma, there is current DNA analysis being done that shows some promise.

If your landscaping trees are infected with Ash Yellows, the best course of action is to have them removed as soon as possible to prevent further spreading. Contact a local and licensed tree removal company for prompt and professional service you can trust.

Is Your Pine Tree Losing Needles?

During fall and winter, it is common for deciduous trees to lose their foliage and enter into a dormancy stage for the season. But evergreen trees are supposed to be just that, “evergreen”; so why do some lose their needles this time of year? Well, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation.

If your Pine trees are losing their needles, continue reading to learn common causes and treatments for evergreen foliage loss.

Fishers Tree Service Company 317-537-9770
Fishers Tree Service Company 317-537-9770

Natural Pine Needle Loss

When Pine trees begin to lose their needles, there’s no need to panic. And there’s certainly no need to remove the tree (in most cases). You see, evergreen trees are implied to be evergreen always, however their Pine needles are not meant to stay green and last forever.

Think of it like this: the hair on your head is always there, but it’s not the same hair from when you were a child. The same idea applies to Pine trees and their needles.

For evergreen trees, new pine needles are produced every spring and summer. These needles typically last anywhere from 2 to 4 years, and sometimes longer, depending on the region. This means that as trees grow taller and larger every year, more and more new pine needles are growing as well. You will find older pine needles farther back in the crown, and newly-produced needles towards the tips and in the branches. This cycle of shedding old needles for the sake of new ones continues on and on, year after year

So Why Do Pine Needles Die Off?

After some time, pine needles lose their efficiency. As they age, they are less efficient at producing food for the tree, so they are replaced by newer, more efficient ones. Also, new pine needles block sunlight from the older ones, which is another reason why pine needles lose their efficiency. If your pine trees are losing more than a third or fourth of their needles, it may be an indication of another problem. Otherwise, the needle loss is normal.

Can Underground Animals Kill My Trees?

With summer coming to an end, and colder seasons up ahead, many hibernating animals are preparing their winter reserves. However, in the midst of winter preparation, animals can be quite disruptive, and even damaging to our properties. This is mostly true for underground animals like moles, voles, shrews, and more. In fact, one of the most common consequences of underground animal infestations is lawn damage. So if these animals can do so much damage to a lawn, could they also harm our trees?

Continue reading to learn which animals might pose a threat to your landscaping trees this fall, as well as, what you can do to help prevent tree damage all year long.

Animal Tree Damages

Underground animals like moles and shrews can absolutely have a negative impact on landscaping trees, especially those that are young or sick. It all comes down to their food tunnels and large incisor teeth. You see, as moles and other underground animals store food reserves for winter, they must create elaborate underground food tunnels to transport it all, while also protecting them from predators who are also trying to fatten up for the upcoming season.

These food tunnels, in excess, can lead to soil instability, which in turn, can eventually lead to a tree toppling over. This is even more likely if a tree is very old or heavy, and in inclement weather conditions. Furthermore, these food tunnels can also have effect a tree’s root system, which is what they rely on for water and nutrition. Although these animals do not actually eat tree roots, they will nibble and chew right through them to continue crafting these elaborate underground tunnels. Not only does this root damage cause nutrient deficiencies in trees, it can also lead to root diseases and death.

What You Can Do

It is important to implement safe and humane best practices for nuisance wildlife control and mitigation. You can use live traps and environmental modification to get rid of a mole or vole problem, safely. Aside from mitigating nuisance wildlife activity on your property, the best way to protect your landscaping trees is to properly care for them all year long. A healthier tree is more resilient to outer conditions such as wildlife tampering. See our blog, “How to Maintain Healthy Trees” to learn about suggested tree care practices.

Are My Trees Getting Enough Sun in Cloudy Weather?

We all know that trees require sunlight for process of photosynthesis to take place. But can trees get enough energy from the sun on overcast days to achieve this? Now that summer is fading out, you might notice less sunny days. But not to worry; your trees are biologically programmed to withstand and adjust to seasonal changes, whether evergreen or deciduous. However, there are plenty of things you can do to further protect your landscaping trees as the weather continues to change this year.

Continue reading to learn some fundamental tree care tips that will keep your trees in good health even in times when the sun is not as strong.

Basic Tree Care for Homeowners

Here are some basic tasks you can do to ensure your trees are transitioning from season to season in a healthy way:

✅ Let Nature Take it’s Course

As for sun and water, your trees, both conifers and deciduous ones, are biologically prepared to handle the changing conditions. This includes less sun and water. If you notice some issues with your tree, it would be wise to have them inspected for disease or infestation. Many summer tree problems can be resolved by spring. See our blog, “3 Summer Risks That Can Kill Your Trees” to learn what you need to look for in your landscaping.

✅ Pull Your Weeds

Weeds are not good for trees. They can obstruct tree growth in a variety of ways, but mostly by hogging up all the water supply.  One of the easiest tasks for tree care is pulling weeds. This is especially important for newly planted trees. Simply check around the base of your trees on occasion for weeds, and pull any weeds that are within five feet of the tree base.

✅ Prune in the Fall

Around 25% of a tree’s crown should be pruned on an annual basis, but should never be over pruned.  Over-pruning can kill the tree, or make it look very ugly.  It is recommended to remove only a small percentage of the live parts of the tree at one time. Weak or declining trees will require less pruning or none at all.  When it comes to pruning trees, use a professional tree care company for safety and precision.

✅ Fall Preparation

As summer comes to an end, you will need to begin your seasonal preparation. This includes cabling and bracing young, fragile, or vulnerable trees. As the seasons change into harsher weather, the cabling and bracing protects trees from strong winds, storms, and more.

✅ Winter Preparation

Wrap the trunks of young or newly-planted trees in the fall to better protect them from winter elements. Use store-bought wrapping strips and apply them to the trunks of trees by winding them upwards like the stripes on a candy cane. You can find several different types of trunk wraps at your local gardening store.

Common Problems Associated With Ash Trees

Ash trees are one of the most common species of landscaping tree here in Indiana, namely white Ash and American Ash. Admired for their unique bark patterns, balanced canopies, and stunning foliage progressions, Ash trees make for a wonderful addition to any property. Unfortunately, just like any living organism, Ash trees are susceptible to all sorts of diseases and health complications. If you are experiencing some concerning changes or behaviors with the Ash trees on your property, it is important to take action fast, before the root of the problem can worsen or spread to other trees in your landscaping.

Continue reading to learn some common problems associated with Ash trees, as well as, what you can do if your trees are suffering a similar decline.

Fishers Tree Services 317-537-9770
Fishers Tree Services 317-537-9770

Ash Tree Diseases

The most common diseases that affect Ash trees are Ash yellows, Verticillium Wilt, ash rust, and Ash Anthracnose. Ash yellows is a slow-killing tree disease caused by a microorganism called Candidatus fraxinii that harms a tree’s vascular system. This disease tends to mostly affect white ash and green ash species. Although there is no cure for Ash yellows, pruning and fungicide treatments in its early stages is an effective way to manage Ash yellows. Verticillium Wilt, ash rust, and Ash Anthracnose are fungal diseases that result in leaf wilting, canopy dieback, and more. These diseases are generally treated with pruning and fertilizing.

Ash Tree Pests

By far the most common pest problem for Ash trees are Emerald Ash Borers (EAB). Emerald Ash Borers are small metallic green beetles that target Ash trees exclusively. Larvae look like small maggots or white worms, while adult beetles are about the size of a raisin, and have metallic green backs. Adults lay eggs inside the bark, and when their larvae is born, they eat their way to the surface until full-grown. Once adults, they emerge from the bark, leaving behind D-shaped exit holes in the wood. Additional pests that attack and infest Ash trees include oystershell scales, ash plant bugs, and aphids.

In order to prevent pest infestations, arborists commonly apply systematic insecticides for optimal tree protection. Systematic insecticides contain the active ingredients dinotefuran, emamectin benzoate, or imidacloprid. These chemicals have all been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and deemed appropriate for agricultural applications.
