Evergreens

Evergreen trees are coniferous, and include species like pines, hemlocks, firs, and spruces. But not all evergreens are conifers. They have needles instead of leaves, which remain in place all year long. Even in the winter, evergreen trees do not lose their pine needles, but sometimes, they can turn color depending on environmental conditions. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. Some conifers do lose their needles each fall. These include Larches, Tamaracks, Bald Cypress. Gymnosperms and conifers are evergreen vegetation. See our blog, “A Brief Comparison of Angiosperms and Gymnosperms” to learn more.

Deciduous Trees

When you see leaves on a tree, you are looking at a deciduous tree. Deciduous trees grow new leaves in the spring and shed their leaves in the fall; then they remain alive, but dormant, all winter long until the sun shines again, and new life can emerge with warmer weather. In the winter, these trees look bare and brazen, so sometimes they are misinterpreted as dead. But this is far from the truth! Deciduous trees simple “sleep” away the wintertime until better weather returns. They shut off all their photosynthesis and chlorophyll productions and take a long seasonal nap! Angiosperms and flowering plants are deciduous vegetation.

The History and Meaning Behind Earth Day

Earth day was first created back in 1970 for the purpose of celebrating our planet’s environment and Eco-systems, as well as, to support overall environmental protection, preservation, and consciousness. It is an annual event that falls on the same April 22nd of every year, and ensues with a wide range of happenings, celebrations, fundraisers, awareness programs, and more all across the globe. Today, more than 193 countries participate in Earth day celebrations, all of which are harmonized worldwide by the Earth Day Network.

Tree Planting Tips

Although you can show your support of Earth day by recycling, picking up litter, carpooling, using less water, making donations to environmental preservation initiatives, volunteering, and much more, a long-term achievement you can be proud of is planting a tree! Below are some helpful tips for tree planting that you can use and pass onto others.

🧭 Choose the Right Location

A tree needs the proper amounts of sunlight and water, as well as suitable soil conditions and space to grow. Be sure all of these needs are met in the area you plan to plant your tree. Refer to nursery instructions for help.

🗺 Adhere to the U.S. Hardiness Zone Map

You wouldn’t have much success planting a cactus or palm tree in your front yard. Be sure to check the U.S. Hardiness Zone map for the proper species to plant in Indiana. Read our blog, “What is the USDA Hardiness Zone for Indiana?” to learn more.

🕳 Dig a Good Hole

When digging a hole for your new tree, be sure it is at least five times larger than the tree’s root ball. This will ensure there is plenty of space for the roots to breathe and grow. One of the most common reasons why newly-planted trees fail is due to planting them too deep.

☙ Use Proper Mulching Practices

Once you have placed your tree into the hole, refill it using the original soil. Then, apply 2 to 4 inches of a quality mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and add valuable organic matter to the soil. Keep it at least 6 inches away from the trunk.

Weeping Fig (Ficus Benjamina)

Rubber Plant

Although the name might imply, we are not suggesting an actual plant made out of rubber. Instead, there is a living plant with the name, “Rubber plant” that you can buy and keep in your home or office. Rubber plants are terrific for removing formaldehyde in the air, which can come from furniture adhesives. Even better, they are the perfect option for anyone with a busy schedule since they require very little attention. Just place them in indirect light and water when the soil feels dry!

Weeping Fig

Figs are delicious, but this plant does not produce the sweet fruit. Instead, they help to filter benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde traces from the air. For this reason, it is recommended to choose a high traffic area in the home, such as the living room or kitchen. They are also easy to care for. Simply place them in bright, indirect light to grow, and water them when the top 3 inches of soil feel dry to the touch.

Bamboo Palm

Want to feel like you are on the island all year long? Invest in a Bamboo Palm! Not only are these plants attractive and unique, they do wonders for the indoor air environment. Bamboo Palms combat airborne contaminants like benzene and trichloroethylene, which can be produced by burning fuel sources, paint removers, and adhesives. And as a bonus, they also double as natural humidifier for your home, which improves IAQ even more!

English Ivy

English Ivy is a stunning addition of foliage to any home or office. This is why it is often replicated as artificial plants for home décor and more. However, English Ivy can do more than just make your home look nice; it also does a great job at filtering out benzene and carbon monoxide. They do require a little more watering in the beginning stages of growth, but after they are established, they are easy to care for.

Ice and snow can turn a regular, unassuming tree into a safety hazard. The weight of such accumulation can cause trees to lean, split, crack, or fall over, all of which can lead to severe property damages and serious injuries to people. If you live in a region where winters can bring about a large quantity of precipitation, like Indiana, it is wise to choose tree species for your landscaping that will stand up to these inclement seasonal conditions.

Most Common Winter-Resistant Tree Species:

    American Sweetgum
    Arborvitae
    Black Walnut
    Blue Beech
    Catalpa
    Eastern Hemlock
    Gingko
    Ironwood
    Kentucky Coffee Tree
    Littleleaf Linden
    Norway Maple
    Wilver Linden
    Swamp White Oak
    White Oak

Routine Tree Care

In addition to choosing quality winter-resistant trees for your landscaping, you will also need to have your existing trees professionally serviced to promote healthy growth and longevity. Trees that are damaged, diseased, or in decline, are already weakened, making them even more prone to winter damages. Be sure to have your trees inspected before winter to ensure they are in good condition for the impending climate changes.

Other trees that are more prone to winter weather damage are those that grow broad-leafs, such as the green ash, American elm, Siberian elm, hackberry, and honey locust. Furthermore, trees with imbalanced crowns are also vulnerable, such as

Leaf Scorch

Leaf Scorch

Leaf scorch is also known as leaf wilt and leaf burn. The signs of leaf scorch are easy to identify. Leaf burn will cause tree leaves brown at the edges, curl up, wilt, and fall off. In evergreen trees, the pine needles will simply turn brown or orange in color. The reason behind leaf wilt is lack of hydration and nutrients Something occurs beneath the ground that prevents the root system from successfully pulling water and nutrients from the earth, and distributing it through the veins of the leaf system.

The lack of food and water causes the leaves to wilt and die. Leaf scorch is not curable or reversible; however, a tree can recover and begin producing new, healthy foliage if proper care is taken. The first step in turning leaf wilt around is determining the source of the problem. This can be from a variety of situations; from new construction development, to drought and high heat intervals. Be sure to consult a professional tree care technician for an accurate and reliable diagnosis.

Anthracnose or Leaf Blight

On the subject of leaf disorders, leaf blight is another common disease that affects the leaves of prevalent North American hardwood trees. The authentic name of leaf blight is Anthracnose and is most commonly spotted in the eastern parts of the United States. This syndrome is customarily marked by several burn-like blotches that look like dead spots or holes on tree leaves. Leaf Blight is caused by a fungus that reproduces by means of spores.

During long rainy or windy seasons, these microscopic spores can quickly travel through the air. They need wet weather to germinate. Anthracnose is not a deadly disease in most cases; however, a tree can suffer from persistent defoliation. The repetitive loss of leaves can cause the tree to become weak, making it vulnerable to other tree diseases. Again, in this situation, it is best to consult a professional in the tree service industry for dependable advice and guidance concerning residential or commercial tree care.

How Does Winter Weather Affect Landscaping Trees?

There are two different kinds of trees that we see in Indiana, deciduous trees and conifers. Conifers, or evergreens, are the pine and fir trees that keep their foliage all year long; while deciduous trees are those that lose their foliage in the winter seasons. Continue reading to learn more about conifers and deciduous trees, and how the winter weather can affect them both.

Conifers

Conifers are also called softwoods or evergreen trees. The popular species of these trees in Indiana are the Northern White Cedar and Junipers. The term conifer refers to the type of “fruit” that the tree grows. These are usually the pine cones or woody cones we see at certain times of the year; although some conifers, like Junipers, bore tiny berry-like fruits that are not meant to be consumed by humans or pets. Softwoods have needle-like foliage, often green in color, but can range from yellows to oranges, and even shades of blue. The differences among species of conifers is their branch and bud distribution, needle color, yielded fruits, tree size, and more. In the winter, these species of tree do not shed their foliage, nor does their foliage change in color. They remain “ever-green” all year long! So in conclusion, conifers are not significantly affected by winter weather, but they do prepare for winter seasons by storing up extra water and nutrients in the soil surrounding their root systems.

Deciduous Trees

The term “deciduous” literally means to “fall off at maturity” or “tending to fall off”, which refers to their foliage loss in winter climates. Every autumn, deciduous trees change leaf color, and then lose their leaves, leaving their branches exposed and bare. This process is called abscission. Although the foliage may be gone for now, they tree is not dead, but simply dormant. It will await the start of spring to bloom more buds and regrow its leaves. There are several species of deciduous trees, ranging in size, color, shape, smell, fruits, and more. Examples of such trees include Maple trees, Ash trees, willow trees, apple trees, oak trees, and cherry blossoms. Trees are not the only deciduous plant in nature. Shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and some plants also experience abscission.

Be sure to protect your landscaping trees this winter by laying down an extra layer of mulch or soil before the freeze-thaw cycles begin and before the first big snowfall. Also, water your trees as much as possible leading up to deep winter. This way, they have plenty of excess water and nutrients to keep them healthy while dormant. You may also want to apply soil additives for additional nutritional value. This is helpful and recommended for newly planted trees or young trees. Contact a professional tree service company for industry advice and information you can trust.

Caring for a Newly Transplanted Tree

Sometimes a tree needs to be moved and replanted. Whether relocating, buying a new house, renovating backyard, adding patio additions or space additions to the home, or remodeling the property’s landscape, tree transplanting is a frequent necessity among home owners. For whatever reason it is that you need to move and replant a tree, be sure you are familiar with all the proper practices and guidelines for doing so; otherwise, you can quickly kill a tree if any phase of a transplant goes wrong. Knowing how to properly transplant a tree is the answer to caring for a newly transplanted tree. Continue reading to learn these recommended practices so you can feel confident when it comes time to transplant a tree.

Tree Transplanting

Before getting started, it is important to gather all needed tools and supplies for the job. This includes comfortable but strong gardening gloves, a large shovel, plastic rope, soil, water, a planter, and an empty bucket. Be sure your shovel is sharp enough to penetrate the ground, and that your soil is the proper type for your tree. Some trees need a sand-like soil, while others require a more organic soil.

Once you have all your needed supplies, get started by keeping the tree amply watered a few days before you intend to dig it up. Watering the tree ahead of time, before the transplant, will assure the tree roots are saturated with plenty of water for when it is out of the ground.

On the day of the actual transplant, start by gently securing the limbs and branches of the tree with the plastic rope. Pull the branches toward the tree trunk, and then tie the rope around them to prevent them from getting damaged during the move.

Next, dig a trench around the base of the tree. This trench doesn’t need to be more than 25 inches. It just needs to be deep enough to reach the tree’s root ball. After you dig this trench, cut beneath the tree to remove the root ball, careful to not damage any roots.

Smaller trees can be temporarily placed in a bucket of fresh water, while you fill up the planter with soil. If the tree is larger, prepare the planter ahead of time since the root ball won’t fit into a bucket of water. Once the planter is a quarter of the way filled with the proper soil-type, add the tree carefully, then fill the rest of the planter will the remaining soil. Pack the soil down with your hands to ensure all roots are surrounded.

Keep the planter in a safe and secure area, and water the tree regularly until it is time to replant it into the ground outside. If you are not up to transplanting a tree yourself, you are not alone! Simply contact a local tree removal company for professional and affordable tree transplanting services.

Are Your Pine Trees Losing Needles?

This time of year, deciduous trees are starting to lose their leaves, as they should. But evergreens, like Pine Trees, retain their foliage year-round. So it is understandable that many property owners worry about their pine trees dying when they lose their needles. If your pine trees have being losing more needles than usual this time of year, don’t make any impulsive decisions like cutting them down! There is a good reason why pine trees lose their needles. Continue reading to learn more about pine trees, tree care, and more.

Falling Pine Needles

Pine trees and other conifers, although called evergreens, are not always green all year. Their pine needles will eventually turn color and shed; and then new needles grow in their place the following spring and summer. This cycle happens every two to four years. As a tree grows older each year, you can see the newer needles at the tips of its branches, while the older ones are closest to the crown. So if your pine tree is losing its needles this fall, don’t sweat it! It’s just going through its two to four-year cycle of making room for newer needles.

The reason why a pine tree sheds their needles every few years is because older needles cannot produce sufficient nutrients and food to the tree. Also, new needles overshadow and shade older needles, causing them to change color and drop. This process is safe and natural, and does not harm or hurt the tree in any way.

Although needle-loss is a normal sign of aging for pine trees, there are times to be concerned. If the needles are dropping from the ends of the branch, this means new needles are dying. This is not a good sign. The common causes for this are insects and disease. Contact a professional Fishers Tree Service for accurate diagnostics and assistance.

Why Do Trees Survive the Winter?

Trees are bountiful, beautiful, and majestic, but these qualities don’t contribute to a tree’s winter survival; or do they? How do pine trees stay green, and thrive, through cold seasons? How do other trees seem to come back to life after winter? The answer is not as complicated as you think. In fact, it is a very interesting and fun fact to learn about all types of trees; especially pine trees, spruce trees, evergreens, hemlocks, and more. These are all examples of trees that do not lose their foliage in the winter. Continue reading to learn how trees combat cold temperatures, snow, ice, and more in winter seasons.

Winter Trees

A typical tree is half water. In freezing temperatures, this inner water freezes, and the trees lose their leaves. Trees cannot migrate south for the winter, or generate heat like a mammal; so how do some trees stay green all year? How do they survive? The answer is physiological changes in their foliage, roots, stems, branches, bark, and more in early seasons, and cellular changes once the cold weather hits.

For the most part, in order for trees to not die in the winter, its living cells must not freeze. The dead cells within a tree trunk do freeze, and surround the very few living cells. As for the roots, the snow preserves the ground, and prevents the root system from freezing. This is basically what allows the tree to regrow leaves, and come “back to life” after the cold is gone.

A tree must not become dehydrated, otherwise, it will not survive the winter. In freezing temperatures, the roots cannot draw moisture from the soil, in order to feed the leaves and stems. This is why trees lose their foliage in winter. Pine trees, and trees like them, retain their foliage because pine needles are resistant to drying out. Other trees lose their leaves because of drying out.

Emerald Ash Borer Facts

The Emerald Ash Borer is a green-backed wood-boring beetle that attacks Ash Trees in the Northern regions of the United States. It was first discovered in Michigan in 2002 and has quickly made a mark in the arborist industry in neighboring states like Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and more. It was thought to be inadvertently imported from Asia ten to fifteen years ago. They are little green beetles that primarily feed on the foliage of Ash trees. But the adult Emerald Ash Borers are not necessarily the threat because their foliage eating has little damaging effect on Ash trees. It is the larvae that causes problems and deterioration.

Emerald Ash Borers

Emerald Ash Borer larvae looks like a small maggot or white worm; while adult beetles are about the size of a raisin, and have metallic green backs. Adults lay eggs inside the bark, and when their larvae is born, they eat their way to the surface until full-grown. Once adults, they emerge from the bark, leaving behind D-shaped exit holes in the wood.

The Emerald Ash Borer larvae is highly damaging to Ash trees, killing thousands of them each year. In fact, since their discovery, these wood-boring beetles have managed to destroy tens of millions of Ash trees all over the northern and north-eastern regions of the country. Affected states include Kentucky, Wisconsin, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, and even parts of Canada.

The destructive effects of the Emerald Ash Borer has cost farmers, arborists, homeowners, and municipalities millions of dollars in damages and losses. The USDA and other caused organizations have been obligated to enforce fines and quarantines on farms and nurseries that contain infected trees. These regulations and restrictions prevented pest-ridden hardwood and logs from being transported out of infected areas.
