A Quick Guide to Deep Root Fertilization for Trees

Deep liquid root fertilization is a common method used to compost and enrich trees. It is a controlled process of fertilization in that the fertilizer treatments are directly injected into the tree’s root system for an expedited effect, which further supports and assists in the tree’s initial development. Deep root fertilization should be performed in the early spring or fall for best results.

For large-scale or commercial projects, high-powered tree service equipment is required to perform deep root fertilization properly. For residential tree fertilizing jobs, a professional arborist will use tools like “soil needles” or deep root feeders. For personal projects, it is possible to provide deep root fertilizer treatments to your landscaping trees without the help of a professional service.

Needed Supplies:

Drain Spade
Slow-Release Liquid Fertilizer
Protective Eye Goggles
Protective Gloves
Power Auger (Optional)

Getting Started:

Use your drain spade to dig narrow holes around the base of your tree. You have the option of using a power auger here if you like, but a drain spade should work well. Make the holes 2 to 3 feet apart, but 6 to 12 feet from the actual base of the trunk. Each hole should be between 8 to 12 feet deep.

Locate the tree’s drip line. Create an additional outer ring of holes along the perimeter of the tree’s drip line. Be sure to retain all soil for re-filling purposes.

Choose your liquid fertilizer. Look for a 10-10-10 combination product that contains mycorrhiza. This will reduce your trees susceptibility to soil pollutants and promote a strong root system at once. You will need a ½ gallon of liquid fertilizer for every hole.

Pour a ½ gallon of liquid fertilizer directly into each hole that you’ve dug around your tree. Wait for the liquid to fully absorb in every hole, and then refill each one with the soil you’ve saved. Avoid combining fertilizers since this can actually have a damaging effect on your trees.

Fertilize Your Trees for Outstanding Results

In the forest, trees do not require fertilization because they are already living in a natural environment. The leaves, branches, and wildlife all decompose on the forest floor, providing a natural means of fertilization. Decomposed organic matter like these are rich in nutrients, and give trees a continuous source of food and nutrition. In contrast, the trees in urban settings, like commercial or residential properties, usually do require manual intervention for adequate nutrition because municipal
areas are foreign environments for trees.

Nutrients in Soil

Trees need a certain amount of nutrients, water, and sunlight to thrive. But in residential and commercial properties, the amount of nutrients in the soil are generally less than those found in natural environments, like forests. This could be a result of many circumstances, including sub-grade work, ground leveling construction, and lack of natural decomposition. For this reason, trees need fertilization to make up for the lack of natural decomposition in the soil. Fertilizer prevents and reverses nutrient deficiencies in soil in order to support healthy, thriving trees. This will make trees look beautiful and live much longer.

Also, tree roots are always in constant competition with grass roots for nutrients and water. Fertilizer relieves the stress put on a tree to recover the needed nutrients to live. To protect your landscaping trees from stress and nutrient deficiencies, it is important to fertilize them on a seasonal basis. Tree care specialists recommend fertilizing your trees before any signs of malnutrition. The frequency in which you should fertilize trees depends on a variety of factors, including the tree’s age, location, condition, species, surrounding climate, and more. Talk to your local tree care technician about the right time to fertilize your trees.

Be sure to use the right fertilizer, and not a fertilizer for lawns or grass. You must use a quick and slow release deep liquid root fertilizer to properly fertilize tree roots. Deep liquid root fertilizers generally contain phosphorous, nitrogen, and potassium, iron, magnesium, and a variety of micro-elements. This combination of minerals and nutrients gives trees the strength to bloom, thrive, and live long lives.

How to Care for Mature Trees

A tree is like an investment. Once they mature, they are higher in value and can even increase a property’s overall worth. This is a good reason why homeowners should pay close attention to the maturing trees in their landscapes. Proper tree care for mature trees is a bit different from caring for early to mid-life trees. Maturing trees can pose safety hazards or decline in health if not cared for properly. Continue reading to learn how to care for mature trees, and who to call on for professional assistance you can trust!

Mature Tree Care

If mature trees are not tended-to in the right way, they can quickly become simple nuisances, and worse, safety hazards. Over-grown foliage can clog gutters, block sunlight to gardens, invite unwanted pests, give wild animal’s access to the roof, and damage siding; while tree trunks can become infected or infested with termites and other nuisance insects. And as for safety, the structural integrity of large branches and the trunk can decline, causing fallen trees and potential injuries to people and costly damages to properties.

Proper tree care includes using the right techniques for routine inspections, mulching, watering, fertilizing, and pruning. It is important to have all your important landscape trees to be serviced by a professional arborist or tree care company. They retain the proper tools and training to provide comprehensive tree services in a convenient time-frame. They can provide tree trimming, pruning, disease treatment (if-needed), branch removal, and much more. As for yourself, there are several things you can do to care for your mature trees.

Start with regular inspections of the branches, foliage, and trunk. Look for environmental problems, damages to the bark, dead or discoloring leaves, fungus or mold growth, pest infestations, or signs of nuisance animal activity. By catching these issues early on, you can protect your tree from extensive harm and prevent paying for tree removal services.

Also, be sure to water your trees regularly, but do not allow the tree’s trunk to get wet. This can lead to mold growth, which then invites pests and other infestation problems. It then deteriorates the tree and weakens its structural integrity. If left unresolved, it can kill the tree. Apply mulch around the base of your trees once every year, two to four inches deep, and one to two inches away from the base of the trunk. The diameter of the mulch bed should not extend beyond the tree’s canopy.

Have a professional tree service check the soil’s PH levels and provide proper fertilization for your mature trees. Proper pH levels in the soil beneath a tree will correct any nutrient deficiencies that hinder tree growth. This also reduces plant stress, which in turn, renders a healthier tree.

Planting a Tree

The first place to start is your location. Think about where you are planting the tree, and if the soil is in good condition. Be sure to plant trees on level surfaces and far from construction sites. As for the hole size, dig a hole in the ground that is at least five times larger than the tree’s root ball. This will ensure there is plenty of space for the roots to breathe and grow. Also, be sure to not dig too deep. A common reason newly-planted flora fails is a result of planting them too deep into the ground. The hole only needs to be as deep as the height of the root ball.

Before placing the tree in the hole, be sure all nylon and twine are removed, and if the tree is balled, removal all the burlap as well. At this point, many people want to use fertilizers or soil enhancers to better ensure to proper growth of their tree, but this isn’t really necessary. Fertilizing trees can be very effective depending on the circumstances, time of year, type of tree, and much more. Talk to a local tree care professional for advice about fertilizing newly-planted trees.

Instead of using fertilizer, or if you forgo the option of using fertilizer, simply reuse the soil dug from the hole. Fill in the hole and pat gently around the base of the tree trunk. Do not fill the soil higher than a quarter of an inch above the root ball. Instead, top off the base of the tree with a few inches of good-quality mulch or wood chips.

Now you are ready to water the entire tree and the soil around it. You can use stakes at this point if it’s necessary.

Why Do Trees Survive the Winter?

Trees are bountiful, beautiful, and majestic, but these qualities don’t contribute to a tree’s winter survival; or do they? How do pine trees stay green, and thrive, through cold seasons? How do other trees seem to come back to life after winter? The answer is not as complicated as you think. In fact, it is a very interesting and fun fact to learn about all types of trees; especially pine trees, spruce trees, evergreens, hemlocks, and more. These are all examples of trees that do not lose their foliage in the winter. Continue reading to learn how trees combat cold temperatures, snow, ice, and more in winter seasons.

Winter Trees

A typical tree is half water. In freezing temperatures, this inner water freezes, and the trees lose their leaves. Trees cannot migrate south for the winter, or generate heat like a mammal; so how do some trees stay green all year? How do they survive? The answer is physiological changes in their foliage, roots, stems, branches, bark, and more in early seasons, and cellular changes once the cold weather hits.

For the most part, in order for trees to not die in the winter, its living cells must not freeze. The dead cells within a tree trunk do freeze, and surround the very few living cells. As for the roots, the snow preserves the ground, and prevents the root system from freezing. This is basically what allows the tree to regrow leaves, and come “back to life” after the cold is gone.

A tree must not become dehydrated, otherwise, it will not survive the winter. In freezing temperatures, the roots cannot draw moisture from the soil, in order to feed the leaves and stems. This is why trees lose their foliage in winter. Pine trees, and trees like them, retain their foliage because pine needles are resistant to drying out. Other trees lose their leaves because of drying out.

Does Tree Fertilization Help?

We all want our beloved trees to thrive, remain healthy, and stay protected all year long. With this said, it is common for homeowners to inquire about tree fertilization, tree care, and the positive affects it has on our landscaping. People want to know if fertilizing a tree is helpful or simply excessive. Continue reading to learn the answer!

Fertilizer for Trees

There are indeed various fertilizers on the market for trees, shrubs, bushes, and several other types of plant life. They exist for two reasons; demand and necessity. Some of these products are effectual and worth the minimal investment; however, tree fertilizers are not so lucrative. Trees survive by deriving nutrients and water from the soil below. This soil is nutrient-rich and already contains an abundant amount of god stuff that trees need to thrive and be healthy. Adding a tree fertilizer to a tree that has already been planted is not much help. Think of it this way: if you are going to a birthday party, where cake is already expected, would you show up with another cake? The answer is probably no. Although the extra cake doesn’t necessarily hurt anyone, it is not necessary to begin with. It is excessive, just like fertilizing a tree after it has been planted. Another question arises about newly planted trees and tree fertilizing. The answer is the same. Although it will not hurt the tree, it is simply excessive and unnecessary, and a waste of money. Tree fertilization only makes planting trees more expensive!
